About the Event

Water Dressed in Vacuum: A Journey into Vibrational Strong Coupling and Polariton Physics

When confined electromagnetic vacuum modes couple strongly to molecular vibrations, something remarkable happens: light and matter lose their individual identities and merge into hybrid quantum states called vibro-polaritons. This talk introduces the physics of cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) from the ground up — beginning with how geometric boundary conditions quantize the vacuum electromagnetic field, how coupling strength is characterized, and what distinguishes the strong and ultra strong coupling regimes. We then turn to vibrational strong coupling, where mid-infrared cavity modes hybridize with molecular vibrational transitions to produce vibro-polaritons with profoundly altered chemical and physical properties. Special attention is given to water, whose O–H stretch vibrations have emerged as a particularly compelling candidate for polariton formation. Finally, we offer a brief exploration of an emerging question: whether biological cells — with their nanoscale geometries, confined water, and intense endogenous electric fields — may constitute natural cavities capable of sustaining vibro-polaritonic states, with implications for our understanding of cellular biophysics.
